According to archeologists, people in ancient Egypt used to apply henna to stain the fingers and toes of Pharaohs, prior to the process of mummification.
The Art form
The art form of applying henna (known as mehndi, mehandi or mehendi) varies from region to region. The varying designs have different implications for different cultures. Some people believe it is good for health, fertility, wisdom and spiritual enlightenment.
Arabic mehndi designs are generally large, floral patterns on the hands and feet. Indian style of applying mehndi is all about using fine and thin lines for lacy, floral and paisley patterns. It is applied in a manner so as to cover the entire hand, forearms, feet, and shins. African mehndi patterns are bold, large geometric designs, usually black.
